{"id":37,"date":"2023-01-20T20:02:37","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T20:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/keac.co.uk\/site\/?p=37"},"modified":"2023-01-20T20:02:37","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T20:02:37","slug":"eglinton-loch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keac.co.uk\/site\/index.php\/2023\/01\/20\/eglinton-loch\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Eglinton Loch<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Eglinton Loch<\/strong>\u00a0(NS 232698 642303) is a small freshwater loch in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Ayrshire\">North Ayrshire<\/a>\u00a0Council Areas (KA12 8TA), lying in a holm of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lugton_Water\">Lugton Water<\/a>\u00a0near\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irvine,_North_Ayrshire\">Irvine<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilwinning\">Kilwinning<\/a>, within\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eglinton_Country_Park\">Eglinton Country Park<\/a>, in the parish of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilwinning\">Kilwinning<\/a>. The loch has 3 small islands within it and is one of a number of Ayrshire&#8217;s artificial lochs, created by mineral excavation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 6.5 ha loch, 6 metres deep, was created in 1975 through the extraction of materials used in the construction of the A 78 (T) Irvine and Kilwinning bypass. It is marked on old maps as being an area liable to flooding and was the site of the jousting matches at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eglinton_Tournament_of_1839\">1839 Eglinton Tournament<\/a>. It is not very well stocked with coarse fish anymore, and is no longer as popular for angling as it once was<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eglinton_Loch#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0but remains a popular spot for bird watchers.
